If you have a free day in San Juan and want to see a more local side of Puerto Rico, Piñones is worth knowing about. It sits on the coast just east of Isla Verde and the airport, in the municipality of Loíza, and it feels a world away from the hotel strip. Think roadside kiosks, mangroves, and a long, open Atlantic shoreline.
What Is Piñones?
Piñones is home to the Piñones State Forest, a natural reserve with a mangrove forest. It is one of the closest places to San Juan where you can see this kind of coastal nature without going far from the city.
The area is also known for the food stands that line the main road, PR-187. Locals come out on weekends for fried snacks, cold drinks and music, and visitors are welcome to join in.

The Food: What to Try
The kiosks are the heart of Piñones. If you are new to Puerto Rican fried snacks, here are the classics you will see on most menus:
- Alcapurrias: fritters made from green banana or yautía, filled with seasoned meat.
- Bacalaítos: thin, crispy codfish fritters.
- Empanadillas: fried turnovers with a savory filling.
- Piononos: sweet plantain wrapped around a savory filling.
Go with an appetite and share a few things. Bring a little cash in case a stand does not take cards, and ask the person behind the counter what they recommend. That is half the fun.
Beaches and Ocean Conditions
Several beaches are tucked along this coast, including Playa Aviones, Playa Chatarra, Tres Palmitas and Vacía Talega. Some of them are better for watching waves, and for surfers, than for swimming, because this is the open Atlantic side of the island.
Check the ocean conditions before you get in the water, follow any posted warnings, and swim only where you feel comfortable. Calm days make a big difference.

The Boardwalk and Bike Path
Piñones has a well-known boardwalk and bike trail, the Paseo Piñones, that runs through parts of the forest. It has been recognized for non-motorized transportation, and it is popular with walkers and cyclists.
A word of caution: reports say some sections are in poor condition and a reconstruction is planned in phases. Do not cross damaged sections, and turn around if conditions look unsafe. A car or a driver is the easiest way to see the area, since the path is not a reliable continuous route right now.
Practical Tips for Visiting
- Plan about two to four hours for a relaxed visit.
- Weekday mornings are quieter. Weekends are livelier, with more traffic on PR-187.
- Bring water, sunscreen and a hat. There is not much shade in places.
- Park only where it is allowed, and do not leave valuables visible in a car.
- Check the weather and sea conditions before you head out.
Cruise Day or Short Visit? Plan Your Time
If you are arriving by ship, a full Piñones outing can be a lot to fit between all-aboard times. Our free cruise-day guide helps you decide how to spend your hours in port, and we are happy to talk through what is realistic on your schedule.
For a relaxed, local day, our private Jeep tour is built around you. It runs about 5 hours, covers Old San Juan’s major points of interest, then two local beaches. The two beaches are chosen by guest preference and the day’s weather. The private Jeep is $474 per tour for 2 to 4 guests, and groups of 5 to 11 travel in a passenger van at $100 per person. We pick you up at your hotel or cruise ship, stay flexible around ship times, include a cooler with water, and offer the tour in English or Spanish. If you would like a shorter outing, the 2-hour Old San Juan city photo tour is a private, driven tour with hop-off, hop-on photo stops, at $200 total for up to 4 guests. It is scheduled on request based on availability, so contact us to set it up. See all of our cruise ship pickup tours too.
